Our Care & Share Season at Stratford Landing

SLES Care & Share is a program that supports SLES families in need of additional support. 2020 has been a year we will all remember! It’s had challenges & silver linings we couldn’t have imagined a year ago. We are committed to helping our families & staff continue to support each other now, as well as when we are all back together in person.

You can choose from the following four options to support SLES families.

Thank you in advance for your support of our Dolphin Community. We are “One Stratford”!

GIFT CARDS FOR FAMILIES  Donate a $10 gift card for the following local stores to provide support for our SLES families this holiday season: Walmart, Shoppers, Giant, Safeway: https://slpta.org/care-share or email careandshare@slpta.org

NEED/GIVE SUPPORT TO CARE & SHARE FAMILIES  For the remainder of the school year, the PTA will offer a Need/Give program to help SLES families with groceries, supplies, assistance, errands and other items they may need: https://slpta.org/care-share. If you are a family in need of support, please complete this confidential form that is shared directly with school staff. If you would like to offer support, please complete the form.

This flier provides some additional details, links and information for our families to participate.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1EDbIT8IYhCmyeiWme3asr5xLdNvYrrd0/view

December 1 - McALISTER’S DAY Order in-store, online, takeout or curbside and McAlister’s will give back 25% to SLES. Order for your family AND donate a meal to an SLES family: https://slpta.org/care-share

Through December 2 - AR WORKSHOP DIY ORNAMENT KITS The ‘Do-It-Yourself’ hands-on workshop in Old Town is partnering with SLES on DIY ornament kits - at home - and giving back up to 20% on each kit sold. Order for your family AND donate to another SLES family: https://www.arworkshop.com/event/?loc=alexandria&ev=204203

Congratulations for Raising $20,000 through Rock N Fun; Tuesday is the Final Spirit Rally

Thank you to all of the families and friends of the school that donated! This was a strong start to meeting our budget for the 2020 - 2021 school year. Based on the money raised, students earned their Rock ‘n Fun shirts, and other prizes that included spirit prizes, rainy day items for the school and we saw Mr. Magee and Mr. Fannon carry out the ice bucket challenge!

The fun isn’t over yet - students will participate in the Rock ‘n Fun pep rally on Tuesday, 12/2. There will be music, dancing, “Would You Rather” Challenges from our Principal, and a few other surprises.

Dolphins - wear your Rock N Fun t-shirt on Tuesday. If you haven’t picked yours up, you can do so at the SLES main entrance/vestibule with a contactless pickup, starting Monday, 11/30 from 9 am - 4 pm. Ring the bell to pick up your Rock N Fun items.

The fundraising was awesome, but since we were not able to meet our full Rock ‘n Fun budget, the PTA will work together along with school administration to determine the best ways to meet the financial goals of 1) resources to support outdoor education, 2) support for teachers on virtual platforms and in-person classrooms (i.e. classroom libraries), 3) non-screen learning tools for families, and 4) mindfulness initiatives.

Thank you to Steph Fultz for spearheading the Rock N Fun effort and Committee - she truly rocks!!! Thank you committee members Sara Jefferies, Megan Gottemoeller, Chris Estenson, Jamie Mellon, Amanda Hood, Sandy Hodgkinson, Craig Stephens and Jill Cox.

A big thank you to the teachers, students and administration for making this fundraiser possible. We could not have pulled this off without the help of Mr. Morris, the staff and every single teacher who worked to support the Rock ‘n Fun in their class!

‘One Stratford’ -- you came together and made this happen!

SLES PTA Inclusion and Advocacy Group virtual meeting Thurs. 11/19 @ 7pm

The SLES PTA Inclusion and Advocacy group will be holding its first virtual welcome meeting this school year on Thursday, November 19th at 7pm.

SLES supports a diverse group of learners, and navigating the educational system can be challenging, especially when your student requires specific supports for learning. The mission of this group is to provide an advocacy, connection and collaboration point for families with students in the IEP/504 process, while continuing to support and promote an inclusion-advocate culture at SLES with all staff, families and students.

Let's meet virtually to discuss the group, what activities we hope to plan this year and discuss how the first quarter went.

Contact: inclusion@slpta.org or jennscully08@gmail.com

Welcome Military and Government Families

Stratford Landing Elementary PTA

Welcome Military & Government Service Families,

Stratford Landing stands behind our military kids and their families! Last year SLES proudly received the Virginia Purple Star Designation. Although this school year will look a bit different, we strive to continue standing strong in our commitment to students and families connected to our nation’s military.  We know that moving to a new school due to a parent’s work relocation presents unique challenges and we want to help make the transition as seamless as possible. Whether this is your child’s first school or eighth move, please feel free to reach out to the front office at Stratford Landing and/or our Military Group here at school.

This group aims to provide community to our military & government service families as well as to provide information and host events throughout the school year including Veteran’s Day and Month of the Military Child.

You can contact the group coordinators Jennifer Saunders and Rachel Calton anytime at military@slpta.org. Let us know if you’d like to be added to the email distribution list which will provide information on events as well as local support resources. We also welcome your ideas of how to best support our group.

Upcoming Events

  • Welcome Virtual Meetup - Wednesday, September 30th, 7pm
    • We look forward to welcoming our new families and connecting with those returning to SLES. We will discuss ways for our group to stay connected and engaged through distance learning and plan for upcoming events.
  • Veterans Day -  Wednesday, November 11th
    • Researching creative ways to virtually honor those that served and continue to serve our country.  More information to follow.

SLES PTA Equity Team Seeks Diverse Leadership

The PTA is trying to start an Equity Team and seeking a co-chair. This Equity Team will work to ensure that our community is truly equitable for all our students and families. It is important our PTA leadership reflects the diversity of our families at Stratford Landing.

It is very important to have the voices of our entire community working with our equity team. The PTA believes that voices and leadership from our Black/African American, Hispanic and Asian families will make this team purposeful and meaningful.

Please email Sheena Arting at community@slpta.org by 10/5/2020 if interested in co-chairing this team.

A Message about Rock n Run and Fundraising

As we begin this very different school year, we recognize that there is a great deal of change. However, the SLES PTA is working to preserve some of our cherished school traditions that are meaningful to our school community while promoting school spirit & unity – such as Bingo Night, Ice Cream Socials, Rock n Run – and some new things we’re cooking up!

We believe that ensuring the sustainability of our fundraising efforts is very important in continuing to support our school community – both during this distance-learning time and when we eventually return to school in person.

This year, the PTA’s fundraising mission is guided by a theme of ‘helping our community feel supported at home.’ We are committed to supporting students, families, teachers and staff with resources that will assist students' being able to fully participate in the school experience and that help build a supportive, connected community. We may be virtual, but we are all “One Stratford.”

To that end – fundraising will look different – including virtual events and/or activities/resources/experiences that you can do from home.

The first fundraising tradition we are working on is Rock n Run (or a virtual event that fosters fun & grade-by-grade collaboration). This will be our 8th annual Rock n Run event!!

For our new dolphins and their families: Here is what Rock n Run has historically looked like - It’s been an annual two-week event during which time each grade participates in a healthy fundraising competition. You can read more about it on the PTA website: https://slpta.org/rnr/

Stephanie Fultz has returned to chair this year’s event – thank you Stephanie!! For those of you who don’t know her, Stephanie has been a “rock” star (pun intended) in spearheading the last several Rock n Runs, with a committee and team of volunteers who make this event fun for all.

And just like previous Rock n Runs – BUT WE NEED YOU TO MAKE IT HAPPEN!! Volunteers are key to making the magic happen. The committee is looking for volunteers to help in these roles:

- Communications

- T-Shirts

- Pep Rally

- Prize Day

Multiple volunteers are needed for each role. Please email Chrissy Kopple directly if you are interested in serving on the committee and/or have questions about Rock n Run: fundraising@slpta.org.  NOTE: The date of Rock n Run is currently TBD, but likely later this fall.

Thank you in advance for your continued support of the PTA and our SLES community!
