Keeping Students Safe During School Arrival and Dismissal
Bicycles, Scooters and Skateboards, oh my!
We have many students that travel to school using a bike, scooter or skateboard. This is a great way to stay active and fit, and Stratford Landing supports these alternative modes of transportation. I’m asking for families to be our safety partners and have important safety conversations with your child that bikes, scoots or skateboards to school.
Some important considerations:
- On school grounds, students should always walk their bikes. Bikes should be locked during the school day and helmets are always required.
- When off school grounds, it is important that bikers understand pedestrians have the right of way. I have observed many instances where bikers ring their bell or shout to others, “Move. Get out of the way!” Please be sure your child understands the rules of the road and what the right of way means. Pedestrians should never be forced out of the way by someone riding their bike.
- When off school grounds, bikers should not ride in our neighbors’ yards to pass other students or families.
- When on school grounds, scooters should be carried if possible. If a student is unable to carry their scooter, they should be very slow moving and in total control with one foot on, and one foot off their scooter.
- When on school grounds, skateboards should be carried. Skateboarding is not permitted on school grounds during school hours (M-F, 8:15 am – 4:15 pm).
- For scooters and skateboards, helmets are not required but are strongly encouraged. Those riding scooters and skateboards should also always yield to pedestrians.
Stratford Landing appreciates your partnership to help keep our students safe. Students that do not follow these safety expectations may experience logical consequences, including a suspension of the privilege to bike, scoot or skateboard to school.
